Our most popular floor sander is the Essex-Silverline floor sander. These are professional drum type sanders which wrap an 8" x 20" sheet of paper around a foam padded drum that is held in place by cams. These sanders are designed to be able to remove heavy accumulations of varnish or other floor coatings and take it down to finely sanded bare wood. The Silverline sanders feature a high output low RPM motor that will not gouge floors anmd minimizes paint burning into the sandpaper compared to other higher speed sanders. The sander includes an exhaust vacuum motor and sanding bag to collect the majority of the sanding dust but there will still be some airborne dust so an inexpensive dust mask is still recommended. The drum design also helps to keep the paper cooler compared to a belt which is why all major floor sanders now use drums. The foam rubber covered drum is very forgiving and first time users can achieve excellent results.

Because the 8" wide sanding drum is held in place by ball bearings it does not sand totally flush to a wall so our floor edger can be used to sand those final 2-3" along the edge. It is also important to sand reasonably in line with the grain. Cross grain sanding can leave scratch marks if the sanding passes are taken at too sharp of an angle to the wood grain. If you have a project that requires extensive cross-grain sanding we do have our orbital floor sander for that application.

While sandpaper costs are not included in the rental rate, our policy is to give you more than enough paper when you pick up the sander. When you return the sander we will only charge you for what you use. This way you don't have to worry about running out of paper in the middle of your project.
